You know,
\nIt’s weird, before
\nI was afraid of every man,
\nLike he was a threat,
\nI didn’t want to know his story,
\nNor that of his mother, of his father,
\nHis wife, girlfriend, boyfriend,
\nI passed him by in my orbit
\nBut last night I dreamt
\nThat they had come to Slaveykov Square
\nPeople from a distant planet,
\nspeaking our language joyfully and
\nMaking strange mistakes,
\n“Balgorodie,” they say, “and other such words
\nThey like to read straight from
\nOur hearts, your suffering is like a white robe and protects
\nProtects against stunting, you Bulgarians
\nAre like waterfalls, discontented but proud, indomitable, always
\nFalling, innocent in your foam, inaccessible and wild,
\nBut kind in surrender,
\nYou Bulgarians, this foreigner told me,
\nThough you believe in miracles
\nYou are like wild balloons,
\nDon’t lose yourselves in the vast, we love you.
